What is the purpose of life?
What is the purpose of my life?
Grand questions using the phrase “What is the purpose” are often considered by spiritual seekers, and people questioning their role in the unfolding of our universe. These questions are important, and can provide an excellent driving force for change and deeper reflection. However, in daily life, this phrase holds much greater immediate value.
You can ask this about whatever you are doing throughout your day as a way to ‘check in’ with yourself and your behaviours, to ensure you are living a conscious, ‘free’ existence, and not merely operating out of a place of social and environmental conditioning.
“What is the purpose of me eating this meal?” can be asked before eating. An obvious answer would be “because I am hungry”, but looking deeper at exactly what you are eating could reveal something deeper. As one is about to eat some unhealthy junk food, an honest examination could reveal the purpose to be “to try and make me feel better…” If this is the case, this may be questioned at this point as the goal of feeling better is only briefly achieved through such junk consumption. A different choice could then be made, more in line with your personal truth, to actually move towards the desire of feeling better. Going for a walk in nature, sitting down to meditate, doing exercise are all brilliant substitutes that will not leave you feeling quickly empty.
A big area where this can be applied is in our daily conversations with ourselves and others. Cycles of negative self-talk can be broken by asking “What is the purpose of me saying this to myself?” Finding yourself participating in idle gossip with someone is a pointless activity that is quickly revealed as such by asking “What is the purpose of this conversation?”
Cultivating the habit of ‘checking in’ with yourself and your actions is vital for ensuring that you remain on the path that best reflects your highest goals. Asking “What is the purpose…” could be a good place to start.
